Bank Ottoman Midi

In 1896, Papken Suni and Armen Garo led the raid in which 26 A.R.F.ers seized the great Ottoman Bank in Istanbul. The purpose of this action was to bring the world's attention to the massacre of over 300,000 Armenians in 1896. The authorities were given a list of 12 demands which called for reforms to improve living conditions for the Armenians. Unfortunately, the operation wasn't very well planned and Papken Suni was killed when he threw himself on a grenade in order to save his comrades. Three others were killed and five wounded with the rest given safe passage to France. The Ottoman government however, reneged on its negotiated promises to implement reforms.

Bank Ottoman has been seized
By the Tashnagtzagan Committee.
In it they have filled
Explosive, destructive bombs.

Every brave Armenian waited
For that dear moment
When would the bomb be thrown?
And the enemy destroyed.

Behold, from the window fell
A round grenade.
There trembled Sultan Hamid
And his evil Izzet Pasha.

When Hamid heard the news,
He called Nazim to his side.
Go, he said, and calm
Those agitator Armenians.

Bank Ottoman is placed
Under the command of Papken Suni.
There was martyred Papken Suni,
The noble Tashnagtzagan giant.

His name terrified
A hundred thousand Moslems
And the one called Sultan Hamid
The cruel race's Caliph.

Ankoot azkeen khaleefan.
