One of the best ways to get around in Yerevan as well as Armenia in general is the "marshrutni".  This is a van that drives along a fixed route and stops at any point along that route when flagged down or told to stop.  Basically it is the same concept as the shared taxi.  The name marshrutni comes from the Russian word "marshrut" which means route.  The Russian word for these vans is marshrutka, which is also used interchangeably in Armenia with the Armenianized version, marshrutni.  Within Yerevan a ride will cost usually 100 drams or less, while a trip to Dilijan will cost 1000 drams.  Within Yerevan each route has its own number, and the routes overlap.  With over 100 different routes, you can get just about anywhere in town with a marshrutni.  The marshrutni lists the major points on its route in Armenian, alongside the number, so if you can read Armenian you are way ahead in the game.  Figuring out how to get from one place to another by marshrutni can be a challenge, because a master list of routes is not available.  I am trying to compile one on this page which I will update as I add to it.
