ARMENIAN Resources at the Library of Congress

From Levon Avdoyan, Armenian and Georgian Area Specialist

If you have the facility to telnet, you may wish to get into LC's
database. The best way to do this is through LC's gopher, MARVEL.

        Telnet to marvel.loc.gov
        Logon: Marvel
        Select menu item 6
select menu item 4 (I believe--it's connect to LC database without a password)
        Choose item 1
        Choose item 3

Type: find s armenian translations english

                for newer works

Type: find s armenian translations english;f=prem

                for older works
If you do not care what language the translations are in, omit
english, or substitute another, e.g. russian

To change the page, type: page np

You can do any number of similar searches, e.g. kurdish
literature, armenian poetry, short stories armenian, armenian literature,
	etc.

We do not have everything, but certainly it would give you an
idea of some of the types of materials available.

There are two ways to get into LOCIS, the Library of Congress Information System. 1. You may telnet directly into LOCIS by using the address: locis.loc.gov. 2. You may telnet into our gopher (MARVEL) by using the address marvel.loc.gov and the login marvel (or through a local gopher client, pointing to marvel.loc.gov, port 70). This way will allow you access to LOCIS AND all the other (many and varied) items which we have loaded, from information on Congress, LC to links to library catalogs around the world. Note that LOCIS is available only during our hours of service (which will be posted as you enter). Roughly: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6AM-9:30 P.M. EST; Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, 6AM-5:00P.M. There are help screens to guide you through your search, but you may need to play around with it for a while. And I am always here to help if you need it. I always liken LOCIS to the New York subway: it's old, it's bulkly and hard to use; but it gets you to more places than anywhere else. Last estimate is that we have somewhere around 20,000,000 books, and over 100,000,000 items. Unfortunately not all of them are online, but enough to satisfy most of us, I hope. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + Levon Avdoyan Phone: (202) 707-5680 + + Armenian and Georgian Area Specialist FAX: (202) 707-1724 + + Near East Section/AMED Email: Lavd@loc.gov + + The Library of Congress + + Washington, DC 20015-4723 + + + + The views expressed are my own and not necessarily those + + of the Library of Congress. + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
