Hello there. My name is Josh Hayes and I am from San Diego California. I have an addition for your "Famous Armenians" page. I am creating a website for my favorite band, System of a Down, who happen to be Armenian in origin. They were voted one of the biggest upcoming bands for 1998, and are soon to be going on tour. Serj Tankian is the name of the lead singer of the group. His email is sysdown@planetworks.com. I would also like to request the use of some of the information and links from your page as I hope to include an html file about Armenia on my webpage. I will gladly give you credit and link your page. Please consider my request, and thank you very much for your time. My url is:

Please take the time to visit my page for the best band here in the states. Thank you.

What about Adrean Barbeau? Isn't she Armenian? She was on the TV show "Maude" and played Maudes daughter as well in being in movies like Stephen King's "CreepShow". Haven't found a source but I remember an interview along time ago about her saying she was part Armenian.

Tom Dagirmanjian [Tom_Dagirmanjian@radix.net]

I was intrested in where you got the information about these famous Armenian people. There is another famous Armenian on "Party of Five" He used to be a regualar on the show the first season, but he occationally appears as a guest on the show, like he did in the last episode. His name is Michael Goorjian, ans his character name is "Justin". but i'm only assuming that he is Armenian because his last name and he looks soo Armenian so therefore to me he must be an Armenian. If you want to add this to the list, go ahead.

Also the group "In to Deep",or"N 2 Deep" Are Armenians. They rap the classic song "Back to the Hotel" The lead rapper in Lebaniz Hye. Annette!!

Armenian Hall of Fame

Dear Mr. Kojian:

While browsing today I stumbled upon your site and noticed that a famous children's entertainer, Raffi, comprised your list of Armenian notables.  I was dismayed to find that he is the only Cavoukian you find worthy of mentioning.  I agree that Raffi's notoriety around the world and his efforts in environmental conservation make him worthy of inclusion, however, you must know that his father, Artin, and his brother, Onnig, preceded him long before he gained such acclaim.

A world renowned photographer, Artin Cavoukian was an accomplished artist who had great knowledge and mastery of colour.  Knowing that a person could not subsist on a career in painting, he turned to photography.  His father, Ohaness, a master painter and photographer, himself, was his source of education.  In relatively short time, he established himself as a skilled black and white photographer.  His love of colour sent him on a quest to learn all he could about colour photography techniques, the result of which was the first colour portrait studio in all the world.  Cavouk Portraits of Canada is well known around the world and Studio Cavouk of Egypt still remains in the memories of Mid-easterners.  Onnig Cavoukian pioneered the technique of transferring colour images onto canvas.  Together, the two have photographed countless numbers of royalty, heads of state, clergy, and famous musicians and artists such as

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip of England Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother of England The Shah and Empress Farah of Iran Princess Alexandra and Mr. Ogilvy of England Earl and Lady Mountbatten of Burma Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson Prime Minister John Diefenbacker President Charles De Gaulle of France Vice President Hubert Humphrey Lee Iococca Leoned Breznev of USSR Alexei Kosygin of USSR Anastas Mikoyan Mareshal Pakramian Pope Paul I Cardinal Agagenian Catholicos Vasken I Catholicos Karekin I Catholicos Aram Aram Khatchadourian Yehudi Menuhin Anne Murray Oscar Peterson Lily Choukazian Charles Aznavour Joni Mitchell Youssef Karsh

This is but a minute portion of Cavouk's client list as I would be typing, and you would be reading this, well into the next century.  I must also mention that the list of medals presented to them by Popes and Catholicos' is very impressive.  They have done much for Armenians and people of other origins. In addition you can read about Mr. Cavoukian on page 698 of the second volume of the Soviet Armenian Encyclopedia which is published in Armenia.

Although, Artin Cavoukian is now deceased, Onnig Cavoukian continues to keep the Cavouk name in the forefront by way of his unique style and own skill and excellence as a photographer.  I am sorry to see that your Hall of  Fame is not up to date.  If you require more evidence of their merit, you can contact Cavouk Portraits, at 416 787-9585, fax # 787-9767.

Sincerely,
Teny Weir

Genera Antranik Ozanian

Dear Friend,

Dear Rafi, A month ago I sent you an e-mail with a suggestion. In fact the Hall of Fame of all armenians can begin with his name, one of the greatest armenian heroes for all times - Antranik Ozanian, the famous General Antranik or Antranik Pasha as all armenians know him. If you are interested you may receive much information about him from local sources or his biographers in USA ore elsewhere. So I think that his name will decorate your list and serve as an everlasting memory of the armenian freedom fighter (who spent several years in USA, he also died here and was buriied in Paris, France). Dear Raffi
I would like to confirm one of your other e-mails about Andranik Iskenderian (right spelling) a magnificent fullback of Iranian National team which visited the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and a veteran of Cosmos at USA. Played alongside legends such as Pele, Beckenbauer, etc. I know for a fact he is Armenian since he was my neighbour in Tehran and has played football with me and other kids in my street several times. He was a sweetheart of a man and always had time for us kids who used to look up to him as an Armenian hero who made the national team against all odds. Another one which I sent to you last year but did not get used is Brian Goorjian who is the coach of South East Melbourne Magic in Australia's National Basketball League and has won three Championships. I know he is Armenian because I intrerviewd him in 1995 for AIM magazines faces column which got published.
Here's a couple of others you can check on:
Gene Simmons - Kiss guitarist
Taylor Dane - singer
Robert Gueddiguian - director (AIM - March 1998)
Elvis Presley - just  kidding!

2 more hall of famers

Dear Raffi,
I love your web page.  I have a couple more suggestions for you.  Stephen Bedrosian is 1/2 armenian for sure.  He is definitely qualified enough to be a Armenian Hall of Famer.  I know he is half armenian because it is in the book "Armenian-American/Canadian Who's Who of Outstanding Athletes, Coaches, and Sports Personalities."  The book is written by Richard N. Demirdjian. Bedrosian won the American League Cy Young Award in 1987 when he posted a major league record, most saves-13 consecutive appearances.  His grandparents are from Kharpert, Turkey.
Another suggestion is also Harut Karapetyan of the LA Galaxy.

Dear Raffi !

What a fantastic site you have created. Here comes a couple of other famous armenians,18 th century; Boghos Nubar Pacha ( Egypt ) , Dadian family ( Turkey ) Dusian family ( Turkey ) , Balyan family ( Turkey ). The family d´Ohsson ( three generations of dragomans , interpreters, that worked at the Swedish Embassy during 17 th and 18 th century. The most famous of the three , Ignatius Mouradgea d´Ohsson ( Toussunian ) . He publiced a work of three volumes ( first volume printed 1795 , 1797 and 1821 ). The name of that out - standing work was `` Tableau Général de l´Empire Ottoman ´´ . These books are considered to be most prominent work about Turkey in 17 th century. For collectors of old books they are highly sought for. In 1780 Ignatius Mouradgea d´Ohsson was knighted Baron by the Swedish King Gustav the III for his services to he Swedish Crown. His son Abraham Konstantin d´Ohsson was educated in Sweden and worked as a Swedish diplomat at beginning of 18. th century. He was involved in the negociations that led to Swedish participation at the battle of Leipzig 1813. That was the last time Swedish troops was engaged in warfare at the european continent.

Keep up your good work.

I will get back to you

Yours Sincerely

Aram Hellstadius - Kurkdjian

Hi, my name is Ana Sirabionian. I believe you recieved an email some time ago about a band called System of a Down from a young man by the name of Josh Hayes. .... The members are Serj Tankian (lead singer), Daron Malakian(guitarist), John Dolmayan(bassist) and Shavarsh Odadjian(bassis). With all due respect, ... They are incredibly talented young Armenian men (3 out of which have attended my school ). ...

System of a Down is a band that will soon explode worldwide. They are on tour right now and I just purchased their album today. They are very intelligent people with very strong and meaningful lyrics. With their song "P.L.U.C.K." they have been able to inform non-Armenian about the Armenian Genocide and the pain of our people. Along with their fame, I am convinced, will come the fame of the Armenian culture.....

                                        Thank you, Ana Sirabionian ....

Dear Sirs,   I am writing this to you because of my girlfriend.  Her grandfather survived the Armenian Genocide and as a result I sometimes go through locations on the internet to learn more about the Genocide.  As I was looking through your hall of fame, I noted someone I think should be added.   You may look into The Chapman crane company out of Hollywood Calif was started by Mr. Chapman who survived the Armenian Genocide. His wife still lives in Sherman Oaks. It was because of the Chapman Crane that movies can be safely made.
I may add that it is sometimes very difficult for me to look upon the things that were done to the Armenian people and even sadder they are not remembered anymore than they are.  I know that since I have been with my girlfriend I have been talking to people about it.  Like me, they know little or nothing about it.  I am glad to be able to find these facts on the internet.
Thank you,
Paul

Hi...: Kurt Vonnegut and Carol Burnett!!! [Raffi's Note: Vonnegut is NOT Armenian. Burnet I have never heard a thing about and would need proof to add to the list]
Also in France, Alain Manoukian (the Ralph Lauren of France), Alain MIkli (most famous eyeglass maker in world), Sylvie VArtan (famous singer), Balladur (disputed but basically he's Armenian--prime minister!), the guy who won CAnne sthis year, not Atom Egoyan, his name is something like meguerdichian... Also, with all due repect Alek Keshshian is a second string director that NOBODY respects or talks about, put him in honorable mention if you have to, its embarrassing as an Armenian (With Honors gotpanned and lost 20 million!) Vartan Grgorian is HUGE, head of CArnegie Foundation and NYPL and Brown, i mean come on here! :)

Dear Raffi,

I already have sent you an e-mail regarding a couple of persons on this list. However, I would like to see you wonderful site up dated... Famous armenians, I could think of, that are not figuring on your list are:

Henri Verneuil - (Achod Malakian) - French film director. He has written the autobiographical book named Mayrig. Which also was made into a movie. A must in every armenian's video library... In my opinion through the story of one single family and in the short time frame of a movie it depicts the Armenian nation's plight and suffering during and after the 1915 massacres very skillfully. Henri has also directed the french movie "Le casse" with Jean-Paul Belmondo as the headliner... His name in the movie was Azad...

Georges Garvarentz - French music composer - He has written most of Charles Aznavour's music. He also, was married to Aznavour's sister.

Paul Garmirian - Famous cigar maker USA.

Alice Sapritch - French Actress

Will e-mail you back as and when I could think of some additional people.

Regards.

Karnig Sarkissian...

Comments: Great Page!!! i actually wanted to add a couple of suggestions:
1) Karnig Sarkissian...greatest Armenian singer!!! Karnig is one of the most talented singers of all time, his music is beautiful and his words are very meaningful.
2) i would also like to suggest all the Political Heros that have fought for our country, they should all be recognized and be added to the list.
3) and SYSTEM OF A DOWN...the band that will be taking the Armenians to the top in the music world, and to correct one of the other posts, John Dolmayan would be the drummer not the bassist of System of a Down.

Thank you!!! this site is badass.

Dear Mr. Kojian,
Congratulations on your great site. Please consider adding our artist Levon Ichkhanian to the hall of fame section. Levon is an award winning jazz guitarist/composer/producer, the most esteemed artist to emerge on the Canadian music scene. Following a family tradition of musicians (professor Joseph Ichkhanian, pianist Edouard Ichkhanian). His composing ablities have been featured on soundtracks and many recordings including Atom Egoyan's "Looking for nothing", he has toured all over North America and Europe and as far as Brasil. Levon has released "after hours" which features him with Grammy winner Paquito D'Rivera and master bassist John Patitucci, "after hours" has reached #1 and top 10 on the H.M.V. indie and jazz charts.

System Of A Down

URL: http://www.systemofadown.com

I really think you should include this Armenian band, they have raised awareness of the armenian genocide and more. Their song P.L.U.C.K. (politically lying unholy cowardly killers) is about the genocide. They have recently boycotted playing Turkey because :-"Our boycotting the show is a direct protest of the arrogant denials and dis-information carried out by the Turkish government regarding the Armenian Genocide of 1915 against the people of Armenian descent. Turkey is also one of the major offenders of human rights as outlined by Amnesty International. Despite all of this, they remain a close ally of the United States. We invite others to increase their awareness of this past injustice."

System of a Down have been cited for their provocative and insightful lyrics. "PLUCK," one of the tracks on their self-titled debut album actually stands for "Politically, Lying, Unholy, Cowardly Killers." Lead vocalist, Serj Tankian explains, "'Pluck' is a revolutionary song having to do with the Armenian genocide, the injustice."

I also run a System Of A Down page, based in Australia located at http://www.tac.com.au/~granto/system.html

C'mon if you have someone who is 1/64th Armenian, why not have a great Armenian band too?

System Of A Down

I just came across your webpage and I noticed that you considered putting up the band System Of A Down, but decided against it. Now, if I may...I would like for you to reconsider. Whereas, this band has not done as much as some Armenians, they are opening up peoples minds and hearts about Armenia and a lot of historical events that have taken place. Most of which, people would never have known. This band is very positive and very intelligent and I believe they have a lot to say. I also believe that they would be very proud to be on your page and could contribute a great deal. This is what they had to say about it:

"Hey Ken, checked out the site, couldn't find us on there, although we loved the site. Let us know what section we're in if we're on it?"

Thanks
SYSTEM

California Armenians

Thanks, Raffi, for your excellent web site. It's a great resource for Armenians and anyone researching Armenian-related topics. The Hall of Fame and the related suggestions page are facinating.

Please consider adding the following three Armenians to your Hall of Fame.

Marvin R. Baxter (family changed name from Bagdasarian)
California Supreme Court Associate Justice

Charles S. Poochigian

Howard Kaloogian
Assemblyman, 74th District, California State Legislature

Keep up the great work, Raffi.
