a new beginning
Today was the official swearing in of Mr. Serge Sarksian as the new President of the Republic of Armenia. It really felt like an important event because ALL the streets were blocked… lots of police escorts...
Congrats to all Armenians (in Armenia and the Diaspora) for the beginning of a smooth era!

The streets, the sidewalks, the shops were effectively closed... the police were blatantly lying and telling people they are not allowed to even walk down sidewalks, that every business and shop was closed. There were checkpoints all over the country, and upon exiting Gyumri the car I was in was stopped and searched... the ensuing conversation with the three policemen, and a fourth behind them with a large automatic rifle:
Me: Why are you stopping us?
Policemen: To search you?
Me: Why?
Policemen: Because it's a celebration today.
Me: For who?
Policemen: For all of us.
Me: Really? All of us?
Policemen: Yes
Me: And we celebrate by having the people drop their trousers while you search them?
Policemen: We didn't have you drop your trousers!
Me: You're opening up our trunk, looking wherever you like... basically dropping my trousers and searching me however you please.
Policemen: We didn't have you drop your trousers!
Me: Shaking my head, closing my window most of the way.
Policemen (as we pull away): We didn't have you drop your trousers!
