Jeff Buttle in second place at world championships

Canadian figure skater Jeff Buttle came in second place in the men’s competition at the world figure skating championships in Tokyo on Wednesday (short program).

As many of you may already know, Jeff Buttle skated to the music of Groong and Kochari in January of this year. On Thursday, March 22, he will be skating free style for the men’s long program, where he may dance to the same tunes.

Buttle’s coach is Rafael Arutunian, a well-known figure skating coach who has also worked with world champion figure skater Michelle Kwan.

If you haven’t seen it already, check out the dance routine he did back in January. It’s so emotional to watch a non-Armenian perform so intensely to traditional Armenian music (integrating Kochari on the ice is no painless task)!

I think Jana Bieger of US gymnastics team performs under Armenian music. It's not kochari but a mix of semi-rabiz party music. Her performance is quite popular with the audience and everybody starts clapping.

There probably is a lot of potential in mass marketing zurna/dhol/rabiz music to the Americans.

As I watched, I couldn't help wondering if the music REALLY had something to do with this EXCELLENT skating! Do I feel that way because it's OURS? .. or did it truly bring out the best in him?
