Man burns himself to death

Here’s shocking news. A man identified as Jivan Hakobian from the Armavir region, burned himself alive in front of a government building in Yerevan yesterday.

Apparently, Hakobian, a 44-year old father of four children, was crying out anti-government statements before he poured gasoline all over his body and set himself on fire. He died a few hours later in the hospital.

No one has identified what truly caused him to do this, but according to a few news articles, he had demanded a grant form the government ‘in compensation for his bank savings that had been wiped out by the hyperinflation in the early 90s.’ He had also, apparently requested to meet with Gagik Tsarukyan (Prosperous Party) related to this issue, but was shrugged off.

Who knows of so many other people who, like Hakobian, are completely irritated and feel helpless? I don’t think people will go to this extreme (i.e. burn themselves), but it’s an indication of how much frustration is built up in the citizens of Armenia.

This is shocking news, it has really thrown me.

There is no way the government can ignore this situation. I wonder how the media will report it.

What we need is less extreme action like this, but on a larger scale. I just hope the elections this year can change something.

To think everything Armenians fought for has come to someone who feels they have to burn themselves to get attention from their own government.

Why wasnt the emergency service alerted?

That’s the dumbest thing he could have done.. if he's frustrated with corrupt unjust officials.. it'd be a lot more productive for Armenia to kill the abuser, not yourself! Armenians need to stop being like sheep and take matters into their own hands if all other democratic means fail and falsified. One of the only hops to stop the continuous cycle of corruption is when people take matters into their own hands and reward with death those who rob the nation!

The emergency services did act. However, pouring yourself in petrol and setting yourself alight is not something very easy to treat. When your body is 80 percent burned by the time you get to hospital, you've no chance. One doctor was quoted as saying "his condition was incompatible with life."

Spooky quote. Anyway, the pics I saw show the guy being treated on the spot, but first passerbys had to stop the flames and even then the ambulance stuff had to cut what remained of his clothes off him.

The guy was dead as soon as he ignited himself.
