We're FAMOUS!

AGBU Magazine has done a story on Armenian blogs, which we are in :-) I saw the printed version, but it isn't on their website yet. In any case, we're not just virtual anymore... we're on paper! Anyway, if you get the magazine, check it out.
Other than that it's the usual around here for this time of year. It's pretty cold, though not unbearable yet. No snow in Yerevan yet, but there is frost/frozen water in the mornings. It will come soon enough, though hopefully not until I'm safely off in warmer climes. I'm actually going to LA this Christmas. It's been many years now, so I thought I'd check things out. I'll also check out a bit of Mexico if I can, since LA won't be quite warm enough for my taste.
Other random notes, I tried brought home a rotisserie chicken from In 'n Out tonight. It was good, though it doesn't come with the famous garlic sauce that keeps us going back to Zankou... speaking of which I haven't had Zankou in years and will soon. Along with fish tacos, the REAL In 'n Out, and a ton of other things I love to eat. I hear that Falafel Arax has closed. If this terrible news is true, I'll have to take some flowers to the site of that great, great hole in the wall. The shawermas were to die for!
I'm also sticking a picture of the inside of city hall here since y'all love pictures :-)

Raffi.. is this the city hall they won't let entrance with shorts on? if so it's good to be able to see the inside..
WHAT? Falafel Arax closed? Chem havadargor...there were only a handful of Armo establishments left in LA that reminded me of a possible site for a "Manvel" video a la "Yerchangootyan Artsoonknere"
Anyone remember that movie?... Raffi, agreed...by far the best shawerma in LA and the tri-city proximity...
SUCH LIES!!!! Falafel Arax is indeed O-P-E-N!!! :) phewwwfffff you guys gave me a scare.
"We're FAMOUS!"
Really? I thought there was a sort of unintended double entendre to AGBU's subhead. The headline is "Armenian Blogs Have Something to Say." The subhead is "Is Anyone Listening?" They suggest that projecting messages via blog to the internet is mumbling in the dark. My original reaction to this post, before getting the magazine today, was "how the heck famous can you possibly be via AGBU Magazine????" Of the 2, I'd say you're a lot less famous for the write-up appearing in their mag than you may or may not have been in the first place for being on the internet a few years.
I think AGBU Magazine next time should include a "We're FAMOUS!" article. Because they got mentioned on your blog.
More importantly, I've only been to Glendale twice during 25 years in LA, and I assume that's where the Felafal place is? Is it worth a drive from west LA? There is felafel to be had around here in the jewish neighborhoods but I don't know to recommend it. What I can recommend, if you're visiting, is the lahmajoon from Partamian's Bakery, 5410 West Adams LA 90016 323-937-2870. Est. 1948 and still going (how long?) strong. Partamian has taught Mexicans to make it. It rivals my Armenian grandmother's home-made Sivas style, which cannot be had any longer since she died long ago. No, my respects mairig, it equals it. If you try Partamian I would be interested if you think there remains among the race any coffee-swilling bribe-taking source in Armenia proper that can match it. (disclaimer- everything I know about current armenia I learned reading right here). Have a good visit.
The photo -- I thought is was a prison when I first saw it.
Wow David, quite a commentary on "We're FAMOUS!", but I was just kidding. I guess you couldn't tell... oh well. I do think that the article in AGBU about getting mentioned in this blog however is funny.
So yes, Falafel Arax was def worth it in the day - I'll give a report on current conditions when I make it there. I am not sure what coffee and bribes has to do with lahmejun (or why you didn't throw in cigarettes while you were at it), but I can tell you that no lahmejun in Armenia can come close to that of Sassoun Bakery, also on Santa Monica Blvd, directly across from Falafel Arax :-)
As for the picture looking like a prison, I can't imagine what prison looks like that, but please imprison me there! The carvings (which look Mayan to me) are in a shallow cave in Armenia within a breathtaking canyon...

If Mexico includes Cabo the MOST sublime fish tacos you could ever hope to have is at the Whale Watcher Bar at the Hotel Finnestra(not to be confused with any other restaurant/bar at the hotel because somehow the same dish isn't nearly as good).
I saw that in the magazine and was like "I go there! I know (of) him!" And perhaps a random thought about us being facebook friends came to mind as well.
Just letting AGBU know that I'M listening!
so Falafel Arax is open?!
Raffi, i am quite fond of Sassouns renditions of Lahmajoun etc etc but here's a new tid bit...one of Sassouns former makers of such goodies has branched off to open his own Bakery in Glendale called Taron...better than Sassoun you ask? Uhmmm...(sorry to say) Yeah!!!
The Lahmajoun is delicious, the Manaaish is thin and cripsy and gone by 11 am usually...the banirov boregs and the long spicey banirov(traditionally referred to as "sarookhs")is pretty darn good too...as is the spanakhov and now, the guy dishes out misov too... this is a simple spot, with continuous fresh Lahmajouns and boregs being piled on top of one another as they come straight out of the oven hot hot...there's Tan & its mint variation available for purchase too and that's about all...clean & quaint...a small line on weekends can't really be avoided(seeing as to good things come to those who wait!)but the service is pretty much first come first serve and no one (to date)has dissapointed me with rude and crude behavior. Let's hope it stays that way...1117 S. Glendale Ave...its on the southern end of Glendale Ave (just south of Chevy Chase Blvd)in the plaza adjacent to the Sarkis Pastry plaza (the one with the Shakey's Pizza and Venus gifts in it)
After I finished typing this, I googled them and much to my dismay...there's a Hollywood location too 4950 Hollywood Blvd. XS:Kenmore...who knew?!?
Glenale Est: 2005 I think...I'm no authority on Little Armenia bakeries
I guess my article in AGBU News has caused quite a stir, judging by the comment above. I think people shouldn't take themselves so seriously and remember that AGBU News magazine is for an inter-generational audience, which means the article was not aimed to a strictly web savvy audience.
While Armenian blogs have a long way to go in terms of readership, in my opinion, they are probably some of the best sources of information available anywhere on Armenian issues today.
For anyone that is interested, it will be posted online (hopefully) by the end of the week at www.agbu.org.
