Traffic jam... (there's gonna be a parade)
Wow, what a scene tonight as everything from artillery and armored personnel carriers to rockets went past my apartment - clearly there's going to be a military parade to mark 15 years of independence. I am quite a peace lover, but I must say seeing this stuff go by was pretty damn cool! As usual, see the pics on flickr.

I saw them too, it was absolutely amazing. We were in a taxi driving up to Sarian street but the whole thing was cordened off as was pretty much every street leading up to Republic Square since about 2pm yesterday. We walked the whole way down Sarian then ended up in Republic Square at midnight when they started practicing for the real thing on septemer 21st.
It went on until well after 2.30am with literaly thousands of soldiers marching in unison around the square shouting stuff I couldn't really understand and every kind of military equipment you could possibly imagine and I have to say I was seriously impressed, I thought we just had some rag tag guerrilla army but turns out our guys can march with the best of them!
Plus we were with people that had already served in the Armenian army and they were able to explain pretty much everything that was going on.
I know the government is probably spending a fortune on the parade, which could be better spent on our healthcare system or infrasctructure but if they're going to do it anyway I'm glad they're so well prepared.
Can't wait to see the real thing in a couple of days.
If only we had the quarter of these munitions in 1992...
Anna, a lot of money is being spent on this but it serves two purposes. First, it will impress the Diasporan delegates that are in town. And second, it will show the enemies of Armenia that the country is ready and able to defend itself. Third, it will hope to show the population that the Defense Minister and the current administration have been doing a good job and need to be re-elected.
