Protest Infront of UNESCO and Azerbaijani Embassy....

So after about a week of preparations the time had finally come to go to Ottawa…Busses left at around 6:30 am from the Armenian Community Center. The event was organized by the newly formed Armen Karo Student Organization, and the ARF Youth Organization of Canada. When we first arrived in Ottawa, we began our protest in front of the UNESCO building with about 100 of us from Toronto, Montreal, Cambridge and Ottawa, demanding that the UNESCO interfere and condemn the barbaric destruction of the Armenian “Khachkars” in Nakhijevan. Although we tried presenting the UNESCO representative with a letter, they denied our entrance into the building. The letter was later read out loud in both English and French by Lori Janbazian and Harout Bakarian. Ung. Mher Karakashian spoke on behalf of the ARF Central Committee, saying that UNESCO’s stance is unacceptable and shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone…The protest later was lead to the Azerbaijani Embassy, along with the “Khatchkar”, the signs, and the Azerbaijani dummy we had made. Ung. Raffi Sarkissian later spoke in front of the Embassy presenting our rage against Azerbaijan’s policy of cultural genocide.

Overall, I believe that the protest went by really well, however, the lack of media was really noticeable by the protestors. I believe we could have made even more noise if we had media attention…It’s alright though...We are definately making a difference, and we can now learn to make future events even better!

thanks to Talar S. for the pictures....Janbaz loves you!

I've also heard that the protest went well. The big Aliyev dummy was a great idea. Bravo!

Do not be surprised if the media wasn't present. They aren't (or are barely) present in any Armenian gathering or protest.

The West always tries to defend and beautify Turkic nations, because they happen to sit on oil - that one ressource that Armenia doesn't have. That is why the media doesn't want to cover this topic.

It is in their (Western) interests to remove Armenians from Javakhk by paying billions of euros for the reestablishment of the Metskhetian Turkish community. It is in their interests to remove Armenia from the map, especially during then next few decades until oil runs out.

Pan-Turkists and Europeans have common interests and goals. That is why it would be wise to continue improving relations with Iran, which is also threatened by Pan-Turkism or Pan-Turanism...

Looks like a great and colorful protest... I hope it got some media coverage!

I can't tell what the word genocide refers to on the big dummy... I hope the word is not being thrown around. You can call what is going on in Jugha cultural genocide, but to call Sumgait, Baku or anything else that happened in Azerbaijan genocide is a bad idea.

Raffi K.,

The term genocide was being used in terms of cultural genocide, not the issue in Sumgait and Baku...

Hello guys,
The demonstration was a great show.
Past experience says If you want media coverage just drop a hint of possible violance or troubles.
The media will jump to it.
Of course no one needs to resort to any violance at the protest.
If the media has come , in order not to have wasted time and money, they will have to satisfy editors for their outing.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hence some coverage will occur.
Good luck!
