Constitutional Referendum

The good news is that dual citizenship is on it's way. The exact way it will be implemented still had to be defined, and when all this will be clarified and codified is uncertain, but it will come. Don't count on the right to vote though, folks!

The bad news is that the vote was once again blatantly rigged...

In any case, for a recap of the whole constitutional referendum, visit Constitutional Referendum of 2005 on Armeniapedia.org

I want to ask fellow diasporans as to why would they want dual citizenship. Mainly, if s/he cares enough for Armenia, why not give up the current citizenship and get Armenian citizenship instead.

In order not to be a hypocrite, I'll go first.

I would not give up my current citizenship because I am an EU citizen as well as a Commonwealth. This gives me the possibility to live and work in the EU without need for special arrangements. I also have a great freedom of travelling around the world without need for visa.

Armenian citizenship would effectively take these conveniences away hence I find it far inferior in practical terms.

And since I think it is inferior, the Armenian government has every right to not grant its citizenship to me.

I am sure that the vast majority of the diasporans have similar feelings.

I want duel citizenship for the flexibility of having the benefits of my US citizenship, but also having the rights of a citizen for when I live there.

Dual Citizenship is like Armenia's independence: Now that we have it, two people will apply and get it (and I do hope that there will be serious restrictions on those who don't permanently repatriate).

After 70 years of beating our chests for independence, we somehow saw the reverse of immigration--we saw emigration.

The vote was rigged--like it or not. 65% percent of this country was not at the polls on Sunday. I, too belive in democracy, but not make belief democracy.

Believe what you will. But, at least act on that belief, because not too many people are so doing these days--especially in the Armenian universe!
