Attorney for NAMBLA represents the Turks

Oh what a tale to tell. A new angle has been put forward by the Turks in Massachusetts, targeting the state curriculums. As reported by the Boston Globe, "Two high school teachers, a student and the Assembly of Turkish American Associations are suing state education officials in federal court, challenging a law that set guidelines for teaching students about human rights violations. The law, which went into effect in 1999, specifically lists the Holocaust, the Mussolini fascist regime, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and "the Armenian genocide."

They are suggesting that "both sides" of the story should be presented for students to allow students to come to their own conclusions. There is only one side to this story... the truth.

Here’s the juicy part. Representing the teachers, students and ATAA is Attorney at Law, Harvey Siverglate. Doesn’t ring a bell? Here’s a little background on his legendary contribution to the legal system… he represented NAMBLA, the North American Man/Boy Love Association!!! Take a look at his website: http://www.harveysilverglate.com/

If this guy is willing to represent NAMBLA, it’s no surprise to me that he is willing to represent the Turks. There’s 1st amendment rights for free speech, and then there is rights to the truth. This would never be allowed if we were talking about the Holocaust.

Here’s an old Associated Press article on the case. (Thank the good ol’ detective work of a few Armenians here who magically remembered his name and connected the dots.)

ACLU TO REPRESENT GROUP THAT ADVOCATES SEX BETWEEN MEN AND BOYS.

By Associated Press, 8/31/2000 07:34

BOSTON (AP) The American Civil Liberties Union will represent a group that advocates sex between men and boys in a lawsuit brought by the family of a slain 10-year-old boy.

The family of Jeffrey Curley of Cambridge said the North American Man/Boy Love Association and its Web site which is now offline incited the murder of the boy Oct. 1, 1997.

One of two men convicted in the killing, Charles Jaynes, 25, of Brockton, reportedly viewed the group's Web site shortly before the killing, and also had in his possession some of NAMBLA's publications. Also convicted in the killing was Salvatore Sicari, 24, of Cambridge. The ACLU said the case, filed in federal court in mid-May, involves issues of freedom of speech and association.

''For us, it is a fundamental First Amendment case,'' John Roberts, executive director of the Massachusetts branch of the ACLU, told The Boston Globe for Thursday's editions. ''It has to do with communications on a Web site, and material that does not promote any kind of criminal behavior whatsoever.''

ACLU officials said NAMBLA members deny encouraging coercion, rape or violence.

Attorney Lawrence Frisoli, of Cambridge, who represents the Curleys, said he is glad the ACLU is defending NAMBLA, because he has had trouble locating the group's members.

ACLU board member Harvey Silverglate said that the group's attorneys will try to block any attempt by the Curleys to get NAMBLA's membership lists, or other materials identifying members. He cited U.S. Supreme Court cases from the 1960s that protected the NAACP's civil rights activities in the south.

The ACLU also will act as a surrogate for NAMBLA, allowing its members to defend themselves in court while remaining anonymous. NAMBLA officials in the past have said their main goal is the abolition of age-of-consent laws that classify sex with children as rape.

At two separate trials last year, prosecutors said Jaynes and Sicari suffocated, murdered and molested the boy before stuffing his body into a concrete-filled container and dumping it into a Maine river.

Aug. 23, the Curleys were awarded $328 million by a Middlesex Superior Court jury in a civil suit against Jaynes and Sicari.

Oh, and shame on the ACLU for backing such a horrible case as NAMBLA. Apparently that is considered to be the most controversial case they have handled.

oh, come on now... ACLU ain't all that bad. They just made a bad decision in this case. They have nothing to do with the Turkish case... and probably wouldn't.

stop personal attacks and try to communicate. what does "if this guy is willing to represent NAMBLA, it’s no surprise to me that he is willing to represent the Turks." mean?

are we enemies again (I am Turkish by the way)? freedom of speech? what about other side of the story? You may heard terrible things from your grandparents but you've never met the other side's grandparents. it is the difference between our cultures. we don't promote hate (but we do hate the enemy during a war that's a fact -but only during a war)

is it "freedom for speech for my people and others should just shut up"?

" You may heard terrible things from your grandparents but you've never met the other side's grandparents."

I have a close Turkish friend and have nothing for respect for him, so yes I have met the other side. From now on, when I talk about these matters, I will say "Turkish propoganda" or "Turkish Government" because that is as accurate as it gets. There is no other side of the story... only one side... the truth and that is all I will offer on that subject because I don't make a habit of defending something I already know is truth to genocide deniers.

And yes, anyone who denies the Armenian Genocide should keep it to themselves in the matter of education. Education should be reserved for the truth, not propoganda. If you still think the genocide is a lie, I refer you to the entire international community that has recognized it as genocide, not the US and Turkish governments with other motives.

"are we enemies again?"???? I just don't even know how to reply to that. From day 1 of Armenia's independence Turkey has refused to establish diplomatic relations. The land border is closed - by Turkey - an act of war. So I think you should be able to answer that question better than Armenia which has been wanting relations and an open border the entire time.

your "we don't promote hate" is a bit weak too. your country reduced our nation to a fraction of what it once was. decimated us. now, half of your people still freak out or lash out at Armenians and are extremely hateful towards us (as the allegations that Ataturks adopted daughter was Armenian show, among many other examples), and the other half of your people don't even know who the Armenians are... just as insulting.

and as Arsineh said, there are no "two sides", there is one truth, and it is well established. we do not need to listen to Nazi apologists in order to truly know what happened during the holocaust, and we do not need to listen to the Turkish government to know what happened in the Armenian Genocide...

don't you see how evil the continued denial is??? how it drags out the original crime? one could argue that the genocide is ongoing.

No more genocide apologist comments - they will continue to be deleted. Everything I have to say on the matter is on armeniapedia.org in the genocide section. Go educate yourself instead of insulting the victims of your nations heinous crimes.

ATAA decision to sue the state in the federal court will be eyes and minds opening experience for the teachers and the students involved, especially when they realize denial of genocide is same as committing the genocide.

I will not be surprised if ATAA decides to withdraw their case, especially when they realize that they have opened a public forum exposing the crimes of their ancestors.

“Armenians do not obey the rule of law in the Caucasus. They do not recognise the international borders. They threat Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan. They occupy neighboring territories, and then they accuse Turkey for the events so-called happened almost a century ago. Who supports them? French politicians, anti-Turkish German parliamentarians or pre-paid-American MPs working for the Armenian lobbies etc. It is unfortunate but the Armenians abuse the past for their today mistakes and sins. No one is speaking about Armenian occupation in Azerbaijan. Armenia does not recognise Turkey’s national borders, yet the French or German parliaments are talking about the Ottoman affairs. This is a dirty politics. Armenians abuses the past, and the anti-Turkish lobbies use the Armenians. If Armenia wants friendly relations with Turkey or any other neighboring country, it has to behave like a normal neighbor. Past cannot be an excuse for irrational and hostile policies. If Armenia continues this kind of policies, Armenia would be the loser side, not Turkey”.

Moving on to ACLU..I just want to clarify that even though Siverglade's actions on the Armenian Genocide issue was not supported by the ACLU!
