Blockbusterig
I've known about this DVD rental store on Issahakian street for about 2 years now, but never stepped in - since I rarely rent movies. I finally went in and was blown away by the selection! I didn't think so many movies existed in the country. 400 drams a day - which is just a bit under a dollar. It's on the block between the Cascades and Baghramian, near the Carwash, underground - but I didn't notice any sign above it. Most of the jackets are in Russian unfortunately, but more of the movies have the English soundtrack as well. Luckily we're beyond the days of video, or I'm sure there would be virtually no selection in English.
So now I'm going to watch Oceans 12... and forget about my slow internet troubles.

Raff what's good about this place is that you don't have to leave a huge deposit like some other places. I'm surprised they trust people so much ... just a phone number and that's it.
Very cool place, wish more places had this much of a selection.
Come on Raff... I've even gone to this place! :)
Time to learn russian :)
Na time to overdub everything into Armenian. ;-)
As I always tell people when they ask - the only use I can see for learning Russian in Armenia is to watch English movies that are dubbed in Russian. Here again, the only use is for movies. It's funny, because locals are so used to the language being so necessary they're often amazed to learn that is the only situation where I can't have things in Armenian.
Incidentally, knowing Russian would not help me a great deal with movie titles anymore. I've been gone for over 6 years now and most of the movie titles are meaningless to me anyway, since I've never seen the trailers...
What does help though if you do know the names of the movie is to flip the paper inside the plastic inside out (or just peek under it). Most of the time the cover is printed in English on the revers ;-)
(yes, yes, Shoosh, it's crazy I've never stepped in... I know people who've been going there for years, but I never imagined it was a nice, clean, normal place - just pictured a ghetto shop with a couple of shelves of movies that others didn't have)...
I've said the same thing when a couple of people have asked me why I don't learn Russian ... "The only reason why I would really learn it is to watch movies."
Thank God a few of the TV channels are translating movies into Armenian now. Not the most recent, but they are becoming more and more up to date. I think State TV H1 is doing a great job with its translations.
I agree, H1 has lead the way in translations. They are showing Mr and Mrs Smith next week, which is still in cinemas here.. Not sure about the legalities of that , they claim all their films are licensed, but I can't see how such films are.
I'm about to start a degree in Russian...so if I only get to use it for films I won't be happy! :(
