YIKES!

It's 2.15am and we just had an earthquake! Sorry guys, I'm not used to this. We don't really have these in Toronto.

Probably the smallest tremor ever, but I'm not used to this. If you've ever felt one before I'm sure you recall the first time. I've felt it once in Toronto, and I thought it was pretty scary, but for many obvious reasons the feeling is worse in Armenia.

Guess you'd better camp out tonight :-)
Know exactly what you mean though, I was in Yerevan during the earthquake in 1988 and even though I was so far away it just felt like a crane had toppled over next to me and the sounds was just indescribable!

Hello, everyone! I was excited to find your blog. Though I live in the US, I sponsor a little girl who lives in Yerevan. It's been interesting to read your posts about life in Armenia.

We felt it too. It was a strong but short one. Still nothing on the news. I guess it wasn’t more than 3 on Richter’s Scale.
Hopefully it wasn’t more than that in other places.
I am glad that we dont live in a flat anymore. The way those flats and generally the buildings in yerevan are being remodeled is pretty concerning. a 5 story building becomes a 6 or 7 story one, a basement becomes a night club and many other degenerated things etc.
The nature makes people feel that they are not more than small creatures, - ants. It was few hours right before the quake that I was passing by that extravagant house at the yerevan-Ashtarak road and I was thinking that what is the whole point of building that huge horses and walls and statues? This is a country of contradictions and absurdity. A huge arena for shooting a postmodern film.

It made headline news on every news program I have seen today.

3 or 4-something on the richter scale, and it initially happened in Parakar (7km from downtown Yerevan ... the village between the airport and Yerevan where they sell all the cheap furniture.)

I wonder if that big house on the Ashtarak highway fell down??

I would drive past it everyday last month and I still find it hard to believe it is actually somebodys home. Who would want to live there? Its vile.

Weird events though, there was a tornado here in Britain yesterday night...and THAT never happens!

So it was only 3.1 on the richter scale followed by a 1.2 aftershock.

Nothing major if this was California, but try living in a Soviet built building and not be scared. Then again, I have a couple of walls that are between 40-60cm wide. When I was searching for an apartment I only looked at buildings that were 4 or 5 stories high. Those 9+ story buildings in Armenia are scary.
