Atom...

Today was a bit cooler, and by cooler I mean I don't think we broke 90 degrees, but can't be sure. In any case it was definitely very nice out this evening. I had heard Atom Egoyan and Arsinee Khanjian were coming for the Apricot Film Festival, and indeed I saw them both this evening at different places. I was tempted to ask if I could get a picture for Armeniapedia.org, but spared him (I already have her pic from the Genocide Conference).

I was discussing rugs with some interesting people today, and later trees with a young Swiss expert that loves it here and hopes to stay for a significant while in hopes of making a difference. It's always great to spend time with people like that.

Speaking of rugs, I'm wondering if there might be some great opportunities to export great Armenian products to countries over the world.

Just the other day I was thinking about exporting Kotayk and Kilikia beers, amongst other Armenian products, to other countries.

How feasible is this? Does anyone here have any experience or contacts?

Well it's certainly feasible, as it's already being done for both rugs and beer...

My dad bought a house a few years ago in the Kotayki marz area and you wouldn't be so pessimistic about Dodi Gago if you knew how much he takes care of the people living in the area villages. My dad wanted to make a contribution to the village school and was told he couldn't because Dodi Gago in a sense has adopted the school and takes care of all its needs.... He's one of the better ones.

I agree with what lori says about dodi Gago. I actually work with his mother, Madame Roza, she is 72, but has more energy than you would ever think. She is the mother of perhaps one of the richest man in Armenia and could easily be a "queen" doing nothing, however, she works from 9 to 6 nonstop for her country and well being of many people. Of course, no one is perfect, but there are much worse people in Armenia than Tsarukyans. At least they create more jobs in this country, while becoming even richer!!! I have lots of respects for what Roza does anyway.

Arin jan, if you are interested, i could provide you with the information you need for exports.

I wonder how the image of Dodi Gago came to be such a negative one among the people if it is so inaccurate. Is there evidence of good ethical business practice from him via proper salaries for his employees, creating significant jobs, etc? Obviously he has "given back to the community" in that one case, but is it because he has to, or he wants to? Perhaps the new money in Armenia is learning the way of Oprah and realizing that by investing IN Armenia, everyone wins, including them.

How you can speak positively about a person who (or his guys) threaten journalists' lives when they dare write something negative about him? Sure he does good things in the community, but he is far from being an angel...

No one said he was close to being an angel :)

Dodi is definitely an angel compared to the Grzos.

Dodi Gago should be tried for crimes against humanity. The pay he gives his work force is just as generous as 100 wet whip lashes to the back. One oligarch + public lynching = Armenia's corruption problem solved.

Serfs are always happy to get crumbs from the master’s table. They feel that they are being taken care of. That’s also good for the master because paying taxes is a lot more costly, unrewarding and is taken for granted by everyone. It’s much easier to impress people when you just hand out a tiny share of your huge (and untaxed) earnings to the proletariat. Even Diasporans are delighted. Well done, Dod!

I am told that Dod’s main businesses (which are in fact owned by Robik/Serzhik Inc.) are not on the list of Armenia’s 300 largest corporate taxpayers…

Dodi Gago during soviet times was arrested and put in jail for rape.

The guy is a criminal in every sense of the word.

What he gives to the schools and help to the village people is probably less than 1% of what he should be paying in taxes.

If he was one of the better ones, then let him pay his taxes, this way our schools would not have a need for handouts from him and every Diaspora Armenian.
