I went to Vernissage today to look for pots, pans, plates, glasses and a "big brother" for the new house. All I ended up finding was a really cool Soviet lava lamp for $4. Can you imagine a Soviet lava lamp factory? A five year plan that includes lava lamps? And to think I found it while looking for a big brother! A big brother is what I call the special "Azgayin Radio". That is the state radio station that comes to your house by its own wire with electricity. You just plug in the big brother and the programming comes on. It does not have an on/off or a choice of station. Only volume control! This was one of the special emergency preparations the govt had at that time (as well as a great propoganda tool) which had the US worried about their own relative preparedness in case of an all out war. They now pipe out Armenian, English and Russian music and cultural programming and are quite cool to have in the house.
